About this book

After a long walk from the hills near Kirklands, Aunt Janet climbs to a dim room in a smoky town. There she finds Lilias comforting her ill brother, Archie, whose long days in bed have worn down his spirits. Their father has died, and Janet fears for the family as she sees the signs of poverty around them. Her own reduced circumstances make helping difficult, yet her arrival gives Lilias a welcome chance to share her distress.

Margaret M. Robertson's story for young readers connects family care with Christian faith and education. In a later scene, Archie discusses books with John Graham, who offers to help with his reading. Archie then gains a place at Dunmoor parish school, while Lilias takes on much of her aunt's teaching. Her pupils' affection and Elsie Ray's growing skills give the school scenes their interest. The novel suits readers drawn to accounts of childhood in Scotland, practical kindness and the responsibilities shared across generations.
