About this book
A painter hires a boatman at Cookham and finds that the help he needs comes with a strong personality. William, a former soldier working on the Thames, poles him to painting spots, brings lunch and shares stories during three weeks on the river. Their companionship gives Francis Hopkinson Smith room to describe backwaters, crowded holiday boats and the sharp differences between people divided by wealth and rank.
The scene later shifts to Dordrecht, where the narrator returns to a familiar inn overlooking the Maas and Papendrecht. His new boatman, Bob, brings a different mixture of sleepiness, stubbornness and sudden energy to the daily business of painting outdoors. This short travel story combines an artist's attention to light, buildings and waterways with amused portraits of the people around his easel. Readers interested in riverside life and the practical company behind a painter's work will find both closely observed.
