About this book
The Man In The High-Water Boots is a piece by Francis Hopkinson Smith. The narrator says that now and then in his prowlings he has met a man with a personality. Among the men recalled are a barefooted Venetian in a scarlet sash and a red-headed Irishman who drove a cab through London fogs in winter.
A painter who crosses the narrator's path is described as a mere lad of thirty two or three. The talk drifts toward the young painter while three people lunch in the open courtyard of the inn at Dives. The host, called the Sculptor, asks why not go to-morrow and says the mill is the most picturesque thing you ever saw. The narrator says none of the jury who made the awards ever looked below the paint.
