About this book
The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser in Plain English, or Medicine Simplified, is R. V. Pierce's medical book. Its title page calls this the fifty-fourth edition and gives 1895 as the year of entry under the Act of Congress. The dedication is to his patients across the American Union and abroad.
Chapters cover physiological anatomy, including the organs of respiration, the trachea, bronchia and lungs, and a passage on how the nervous system controls the small arteries, which accounts for blushing and for the pallor of fright. A long alphabetical index lists topics from rickets and rheumatism to rhubarb and the Russian bath. The book also prints a letter addressed to "Gentlemen" in which the writer mentions taking twenty bottles of a named medicine.
