About this book
The Philippine Islands presents a history whose writer describes collecting material after deciding to become the chronicler of his country. The writer’s account of research describes studying the Colonial archives in the Governor-General’s office after returning to Manila from Europe. The account of banishment says sympathy with the rising insurgent cause led to exile in 1887, with the writer taking away the manuscripts already written.
The discussion of rebel conduct says non-combatants were rarely attacked and private property seldom injured, despite what the text calls severe provocation. The geographical description places Cavité on a small peninsula in the bay of Manila, about ten miles from the capital. The description of Cavité identifies its Government arsenal and the colony’s only shipyard as the basis of its importance as a naval station.
