About this book

On Ireland's western coast, young Dermot brings a fishing boat safely home while worrying about his mother's failing strength. He asks Uncle Shane to promise that she will be cared for if anything happens to him. The next morning, a basket of fresh fish takes him to Kilfinnan Castle, where an Earl and his family notice the boy's confidence. Kingston sets this opening among sheltered coves, rocky headlands and fishermen's huts built from wrecked ships.

The story pairs a fisher lad's responsibilities with the dangers of a wider world. In a later island episode, an urgent warning leads a planter and the Earl to gather families and barricade a house against an expected attack. Listed as juvenile adventure and sea fiction, the novel also carries an inheritance theme.
