His friend and fellow poet, Robert Buchanan, later wrote his biography and compiled all of Gray's mature poems into this edition, both as a tribute to Gray's talent and to showcase Buchanan's thoughtful curation.

David Gray was a Scottish poet from Kirkintilloch whose brief career was strongly associated with the countryside and river of his native district. The Poetical Works of David Gray appeared in a new and enlarged 1874 edition edited by Henry Glassford Bell and published by James Maclehose in Glasgow, with Macmillan in London.
