The Poetry of James McIntyre

James McIntyre, a furniture dealer in Ingersoll, Ontario, wrote verse about the thing his region did best: making cheese. His most notorious poem, an ode to a mammoth cheese weighing over seven thousand pounds and shipped off to a Toronto fair, has kept his name alive as a cheerful specimen of earnest bad poetry. This collection gathers his tributes to Canadian farm life, pioneers, the dairy trade, and the landscape of Oxford County. Sincere, plain-spoken, and often unintentionally funny, the poems open a window onto small-town Ontario in the late 1800s and the pride a settler community took in its work.
