About this book
The Popol Vuh, with the subtitle The Mythic and Heroic Sagas of the Kichés of Central America, is by Lewis Spence. The preface calls the Popol Vuh the New World’s richest mythological mine and says no translation of it has as yet appeared in English. The text explains that the name Popol Vuh signifies Record of the Community, and that its literal translation is Book of the Mat.
The text classes the Popol Vuh as an example of a world-wide genre, a type of annals of which the first portion is pure mythology, which gradually shades off into pure history. The text says the Popol Vuh was written in Kiché, a dialect of the great Maya-Kiché tongue. The text also names Ixtlilxochitl in Mexico and Garcilasso de la Vega in Peru as writers of exhaustive treatises upon the history and customs of their native countrymen.
