The President, a novel, is by Alfred Henry Lewis. The contents list gives, among others, chapters called How Richard Began to Woo, How a President is Bred and How Storri Plotted a Vengeance. The chapter headed How a President Is Bred says that Mr. Patrick Henry Hanway, a Senator of the United States, had the countenance of a prelate and the conscience of a buccaneer.
Grandfather Hanway read his Bible and believed it, and held that the earth was flat, that it had four corners and that the sun went around the earth. Richard reads and re-reads Dorothy's note, which begins Dear One and says that Storri has gained some fearful ascendency over papa. A passage says that, once inaugurated, the eye-glassed Mazarin understood that it would be Governor Obstinate's earliest care to invite Senator Hanway into his Cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury.
