About this book

A winter storm gives a hunting party reason to stay overnight in an old country mansion, and their supper conversation turns to ghosts. This opening sets the tone for Washington Irving's 1824 collection: stories emerge through talk, jokes and the personalities of the people telling them. A boisterous Irish officer and a persistent questioner bring different attitudes to the prospect of strange visitors in the house.

The contents divide the volume into four groups, moving from mysterious adventures to literary society, Italian bandits and treasure seekers. A later passage gives another register of experience, as a speaker who expected wealth faces the need to earn his living. Revisiting his childhood surroundings, he notices how both the landscape and his own understanding have changed. The collection suits readers who enjoy tales framed by social encounters, with comic observation alongside unease and disappointment. Its variety comes from the movement between dinner-table storytelling, personal recollection and adventurous subjects.
