About this book
Starting with ordinary wants and exchanges, Frank A. Fetter develops an account of economic value through the choices people make about goods. His 1904 textbook grew from classroom discussions and lectures, retaining an informal teaching style. The preface explains his effort to connect the relations between goods and wants with a theory of distribution. The contents extend this approach through rent, interest, wages and profits to questions of social welfare and government policy.
A detailed treatment of monopoly shows how the argument works in practice. Fetter separates differences in productive capacity from control over supply, then considers when withholding goods can improve a seller's net gain. Fields, workers and prices provide concrete examples for the discussion. Banking, taxation, international trade and railroads broaden the book's scope. Readers studying the history of economic thought can use its explanations to see how a teacher linked everyday decisions with larger questions about markets and public institutions.
