About this book
The Prospective Mother is a handbook for women during pregnancy by J. Morris Slemons. The preface says the book, written for women who have no special knowledge of medicine, aims to answer the questions which occur to them in the course of pregnancy. The preface says directions for safeguarding health have been given in detail, with emphasis upon such measures as may serve to prevent serious complications, and that treatment of such conditions has not been discussed.
The text says each cycle lasts twenty-eight days, and includes four stages, namely, a stage of preparation, of bleeding, of restoration, and of rest. The text says that to understand what are known as the toxemias of pregnancy, we must remember that the nutrition of our bodies involves three separate and distinct sets of processes. The text says some babies nurse vigorously at the outset but later, discouraged because they get so little, become indifferent and restless, or even decline to take the breast.
