About this book
Theodor Mommsen's The Provinces of the Roman Empire, from Caesar to Diocletian is given in a translation made with the author’s sanction and additions. The edition is marked VOL. I and comes with eight maps. The text describes a last battle whereby Raetia and the land of the Vindelici, that is, the Tyrol, East Switzerland, and Bavaria, became thenceforth constituent parts of the Roman empire. A monument on the height above Monaco, where the Alps abut on the Gulf of Genoa, was erected some years later by grateful Italy to the emperor Augustus, because under his government all the Alpine tribes from the Upper to the Lower Sea had been brought under the power of the Roman people.
The book tells of the Borani, who were landed and, confident of success, sent back the ships, and of Successianus, the resolute commander of Pityus, who repelled the attack. The narrative says the plan was not given up, and that in the next year they came back and, as the commandant had meanwhile been changed, the fortress surrendered.
