About this book

The Querist is made up of several queries proposed to the consideration of the public. Query 1 asks whether there ever was, is, or will be, an industrious nation poor, or an idle rich. Query 4 asks whether the four elements, and man's labour therein, be not the true source of wealth.

Query 41 asks whether in the wastes of America a man might not possess twenty miles square of land, and yet want his dinner, or a coat to his back. Query 125 asks whether it was not madness in France to mint bills and actions, merely to humour the people and rob them of their cash. Query 268 asks whether we of this island are not, from our peculiar circumstances, determined to this very commerce above any other. Query 45 asks whether even gold or silver, if they should lessen the industry of its inhabitants, would not be ruinous to a country.

George Berkeley

George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher and bishop, one of the three great British empiricists alongside Locke and Hume. His idealist claim that reality exists only as perception remains among the most debated positions in philosophy, and the city of Berkeley, California, bears his name.
