About this book
An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision is by George Berkeley. The contents list sections headed Distance of itself invisible, Remote distance perceived rather by experience than by sense, and Hence the mind does not perceive distance by lines and angles.
The text says that what we immediately and properly see are only lights and colours in sundry situations and shades and degrees of faintness and clearness, confusion and distinctness. The text also says that these visible objects are only in the mind and do not suggest anything external, whether distance or magnitude, otherwise than by habitual connexion as words do things. The text puts the case of one who had always continued blind being told by his guide that after he has advanced so many steps he shall come to the brink of a precipice, or be stopped by a wall.
