Malcolm Bannister is forty-three, a former Marine and a former small-town lawyer from Winchester, Virginia, and he is halfway through a ten-year federal sentence at the prison camp near Frostburg, Maryland. He lost his law license after a money-laundering conviction that grew out of a real estate deal: his firm handled the purchase of a secluded hunting lodge for an anonymous client, and the money behind it belonged to Barry Rafko, a Washington lobbyist. Bannister insists he never knew what he was part of.
Then Raymond Fawcett, a federal judge, is found shot dead in the basement of his lakeside cabin in southwest Virginia, beside an empty safe, and the FBI has no suspect. Bannister tells the warden he knows who killed the judge and why. Under Rule 35 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, an inmate who helps solve a crime can have his sentence reduced, and Bannister names his price: his freedom, a new identity and a clean record. John Grisham's legal thriller, narrated by Bannister himself, was first published in 2012.
