About this book

Bored stiff by peacetime after four years in the trenches, Captain Hugh Drummond places a newspaper advertisement asking for adventure, any kind, so long as it is not dull. The reply comes from a frightened young woman whose father is being blackmailed, and it pulls Drummond into a plot masterminded by the coldly brilliant Carl Peterson, whose ambitions reach far beyond one family's ruin. Fast, blunt, and hugely popular in its day, McNeile's thriller launched a two-fisted hero who helped shape decades of clubland adventure and left his fingerprints on later characters, James Bond among them.
