About this book
An elk hunt leaves George Slade Methuen and his guide Ulus facing a stormbound lake and a night in a forest hut. Presented as extracts from Methuen's home correspondence, the opening combines rough weather, outdoor improvisation and a conversational account of discomfort. His observations of boats, terrain and the dog sharing their shelter give the adventure a practical, often comic texture.
Later, a search for a hidden recipe brings ancient stonework into the story. A diary points towards a chamber beneath a Talayot, and Methuen worries that damaged masonry may have destroyed the writing he hopes to find. The arrival of Weems adds the pressure of a competing interest. C. J. Cutcliffe Hyne builds suspense from physical obstacles and guarded intentions. Readers who enjoy resourceful adventurers and the small difficulties of travel will find both in these scenes of precarious shelter and secret investigation.
