About this book
A fishing trip goes astray when the narrator and his companion Bige lose their way through a rainy forest. Instead of the pond they set out to reach, they find a meadow crowded with muskrat huts and promptly name it Muskrat City. Henry Abbott builds his outdoor account around this accidental discovery, combining the pleasures and inconveniences of camp life with close attention to the animals nearby.
Ruined sandwiches give way to trout cooked in leaves, and pocket knives help the companions construct a shelter from poles, bark and branches. Later visits extend the account into observations of mink and marten, alongside descriptions of Bige's winter trapping work. The book offers readers practical camping detail and a view of woodland life shaped by fishing, hunting and an appetite for exploration. Its conversational humor makes room for both improvised meals and explanations of how a former beaver pond becomes a grassy meadow.
