About this book
The Red Cross in Peace and War includes a letter dated Geneva, August 19, 1877, saying the International Committee of the Red Cross desires most earnestly that the United States should be associated with them in their work. The text says the International Committee became in a manner discouraged in its efforts with the United States, but finally it was decided to present it again through Miss Clara Barton, and accordingly a letter was addressed to President Hayes during the first year of his administration.
The writer describes a motley crowd gathered in the street in the vicinity of headquarters, a good-natured, patient, orderly crowd with seldom any loud talking, screaming, quarreling. The writer's party comes into Siboney about three o’clock to find the town utterly burned, all buildings gone or smoking. The mud and water was at least two and one-half feet deep where the party should have gone down.
