About this book

A Sunday walk beside the Thames turns serious when Marigold Ramsay tells Gerald Durrant that she fears for her aunt. The older woman works as housekeeper to Bernard Boyne, a respected insurance agent in Hammersmith, but Marigold has seen something that makes his home seem dangerous. Gerald agrees to help her watch him, drawing their growing friendship into an investigation of a man whose public standing offers little reassurance.

William Le Queux builds this London mystery around the gap between respectable appearances and private schemes. Marigold works at a bank, Gerald earns his living in the City, and their ordinary routines sit close to a locked room and a household under suspicion. As Boyne notices their attention, the danger becomes personal. Published in 1920, the novel offers readers a suspense story shaped by watchfulness, concealed intentions and the risks of asking too many questions.
