About this book
The Religion of Babylonia and Assyria describes the union of the Sumero-Akkadian pantheon, with its many gods, and the Semitic Babylonian pantheon, with its comparatively few. The account presents the resulting pantheon as an apparently homogeneous whole containing elements of the smaller pantheons and great gods who had raised Merodach to be their king. The discussion says Assyria accepted the religion of Babylonia while maintaining a distinction by placing the god Aššur at the head of the pantheon.
A small fragment in the British Museum is described as giving divine attributes associated with cities of Babylonia, whose names are unfortunately lost or incomplete. A quoted text identifies Sin as Merodach illuminating the night, Šamaš as Merodach of righteous things, and Addu as Merodach of rain.
