About this book
Psyche, subtitled The Cult of Souls and Belief in Immortality among the Greeks, is Erwin Rohde's work in W. B. Hillis's English translation from the eighth edition, dated 1925. The contents list includes chapters on beliefs about the soul in the Homeric poems, the Islands of the Blest, cave deities, heroes, the cult of souls and the Eleusinian Mysteries.
The footnotes sampled cite ancient writers, above all Pausanias, on the graves of heroes, and describe the moving of bones, such as those of Orestes from Tegea to Sparta and of Hektor from Ilion to Thebes. A note likens a Greek offering poured into a grave to a custom reported from the Congo. Another passage discusses how a poet's drama takes up popular belief about the soul, with Alcestis as an example. A further passage on the races of men notes that the race of heroes alone is not named after a metal.
