About this book
J. A. MacCulloch's The Religion of the Ancient Celts was printed in Edinburgh in 1911 and is dedicated to Andrew Lang. The preface says the scientific study of Celtic religion is recent and that earlier writers indulged in wild speculation because little evidence survives.
In one passage the author considers the peoples who became Celtic, naming the Goidels and Brythons and listing traits he attributes to them, including vanity, imagination and love of the romantic. Another passage deals with a divine land of eternal youth and with immortality, saying Manannan had immortal swine whose flesh made the Tuatha Dé Danann immortal and that Goibniu's ale also conferred it. Many pages carry long footnotes citing sources and folklore.
