About this book

Six Space Cadets and a Solar Guard officer are aboard the rocket cruiser Polaris, two hundred miles above Earth, when this 1954 adventure opens. Tom Corbett must fly back to the ship with his helmet blacked out, guided only by radio orders from Captain Steve Strong, and his time decides which unit wins the term's top honors.

Later the story moves to Venus, a planet of thick jungle and giant reptiles. In one tense chapter the big Venusian cadet Astro, sleeping alone in a makeshift bag of tough vine matting, wakes to find a tyrannosaurus and a huge snake locked in a fight nearby and has to dash for cover. The book's list of illustrations, which includes Solar Guard troops landing on the rim of a canyon, shows that the trouble on Venus grows well beyond a hunting trip.

Part of the Tom Corbett Space Cadet series, with Willy Ley credited as technical adviser, the novel blends school rivalry, steady teamwork and the running banter between Roger Manning and Astro. It suits young readers and anyone curious about the hopeful rocket-age fiction of the 1950s.
