About this book

The discussion of wartime obligations distinguishes civil laws, which govern in peace, from perpetual laws that spring from human nature and continue during conflict. The account separates Natural Law, grounded in rational nature, from Conventional Law, arising from agreements and compacts, and says institutions change while Natural Law remains the same. The treatment of the Law of Nations recognises a body of doctrine based on consent rather than deductions from general principles of justice alone.

The discussion of funeral honours reports praise for people who granted those honours to others who would themselves have refused them. The chapter On Tacit Faith says public, private and mixed conventions admit tacit consent allowed by custom.
