About this book
On a wet Saturday in a city library, Phyllis Braithwaite wishes for money, a garden and a husband. At twenty-five, she has spent years earning her living among catalogues and children's books. An encounter with a prosperous woman from her New England hometown sharpens her dissatisfaction with long hours and little time for herself. Margaret Widdemer's novel begins with a working woman's mixture of affection for her young readers and frustration at the life she can afford.
Phyllis's marriage to Allan Harrington brings her into the life of a man whose illness has left him withdrawn and doubtful about efforts to cheer him. She wants to make his days brighter, but learns that good intentions can feel intrusive. Their conversation gives the romance a practical concern with trust, care and personal independence. The humor of library life sits alongside the question of how two strangers can become considerate companions within a marriage.
