About this book
A morning on the church steps at Lenox brings Charlie and Bessie's uneasy courtship into view. She wants their friendship to be seen, while he longs for time together in the nearby woods. Their talk turns to Fanny Meyrick, an earlier interest of Charlie's, whose plans to sail abroad provoke Bessie's jealousy. Charlie has his own overseas business to explain, but delays telling her, giving a small misunderstanding room to grow.
Sarah C. Hallowell tells this romance through Charlie's first-person account, combining affectionate descriptions of the countryside with sharp exchanges between the couple. Later, legal work keeps him in London, where a newspaper passenger list arrives in place of the letter he hoped Bessie would send. The novel offers a close look at wounded trust, hesitant explanations, and the way distance can magnify an awkward conversation.
