About this book
The Saint is by Antonio Fogazzaro. A note mentions the condemnation of The Saint by the Congregation of the Index and is dated New York, July, 1906. In one discourse, Benedetto says that the Catholic Church, which proclaims itself the fountain of truth, opposes to-day the search for Truth when it is carried on on its own foundations, on the holy books, on the dogmas, on its asserted infallibility.
Benedetto asks a dying man whether he longs for Christ, and the man bows his head feebly in assent. Benedetto kisses the man tenderly and says that Christ tells him that his sins are forgiven and that he may depart in peace. Professor Mayda orders the gate to be opened and tells the people that all should see Benedetto later, but not now.
