About this book
Pierre Grassou, by Honoré de Balzac, is translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley. A dedication is addressed To The Lieutenant-Colonel of Artillery, Periollas, as a testimony of the affectionate esteem of the author. The text asks a reader who has gone to take a serious look at the exhibition of works of sculpture and painting, such as it has been since the revolution of 1830, whether the sight of those long and over-crowded galleries brought a sense of uneasiness, weariness, sadness.
The text says that now, instead of a tournament, there is a mob; instead of a noble exhibition, a tumultuous bazaar; instead of a choice selection, a chaotic mass. By the time he was thirty-seven, Fougeres had manufactured for Elie Magus some two hundred pictures, all of them utterly unknown. Pierre Grassou never emerges from the bourgeois circle, in which he is considered one of the greatest artists of the period.
