About this book
Buildings collapse, fires spread, and thousands of residents need food and shelter in this account of the 1906 San Francisco disaster. Edited by Charles Morris, the volume brings together eyewitness testimony and a broader chronicle of the city's upheaval. Its chapters follow the flight of displaced people, the struggle to obtain relief, the effects on surrounding California communities, and proposals for rebuilding. The preface also considers the limits of measuring losses while ordinary civic and commercial life is disrupted.
The scope then widens to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions elsewhere, including Lisbon, Vesuvius, and Krakatoa. Explanatory passages describe how volcanic dust, rock fragments, lava, and steam shape eruptions and build cones. Read today, the book offers a record of how a writer in 1906 combined disaster reporting with the scientific explanations of his period. Its concern with hunger, ruined livelihoods, and help from distant communities gives the geological material a human setting.
