About this book
The City That Was: A Requiem of Old San Francisco is a text by Will Irwin. A note says the text is a recast of a newspaper article of the same title published three days after the Visitation came upon San Francisco. The text says the old San Francisco is dead, and that the gayest, lightest hearted, most pleasure loving city of the western continent is a horde of refugees living among ruins.
The text says that across the bay to the north lies Mount Tamalpais, about 3,000 feet high. The text says that in the region about San Francisco there is no thunder and lightning, and no snow except a flurry once in five or six years. The text lists, for a quarter where the Chinese lived their own lives in their own way, two theatres, a number of rich joss houses, three newspapers and a Chinese telephone exchange.
