About this book

The opening says that only now, when all the story is known, can the narrow escape from a dark horror that rose to whelm an unsuspecting world be seen. The text places the beginning of the horror with Clinton himself and with the expedition which bore his name. The submarine provided for the expedition, the K-16, is described as large enough to contain the trawling apparatus, storage-tanks and laboratories as well as the expedition's personnel.

A first-person speaker describes a vast, smooth-walled pit at the heart of a city, which the speaker judged was fully two miles in diameter. A slender tower rises for fully two thousand feet above the globes of the city, with a small, bulb-like room at its tip. Stevens raises his head, stunned and bleeding, to see Clinton standing at the wheel as the submarine races above the city toward the great pit.
