About this book
The account describes Napoleon’s determination to go to Spain because Murat’s reports had not quite satisfied him, and Escoiquiz’s advice that Ferdinand meet the Emperor at Bayonne. Ferdinand’s letter to Napoleon declares that the free and spontaneous abdication of his father had raised him to the throne. The Queen of Etruria seeks to return to Etruria after the events of Bayonne, but the account places her in detention at Nice.
The young Queen’s intelligence makes her an able confidante in her consort’s State difficulties, and the account says she generally attends discussions with the Ministers. The account describes the charity and philosophy required of King Amadeus and Queen Maria Victoria to ignore half-concealed sneers at their foreignness and simple, superior tastes.
