About this book

The Sentimentalists is headed as an unfinished comedy by George Meredith. The scene is a Surrey garden in early summer, with paths shaded by tall box-wood hedges.

The cast list names Arden, in love with Astraea, and Astraea, niece to Dame Dresden and Homeware. The professor is delivering one of his exquisite orations on Woman, and Spiral says that the woman consenting to marriage takes but one husband. Homeware says Professor Spiral calls an Alpine flower which has descended to flourish on English soil Nature's dedicated widow. Homeware tells Mr. Arden that he is the third of the gentlemen commissioned to consult the lady's uncle Homeware. Arden says that Achilles was not the worse warrior, sir, for his probation in petticoats, and Homeware replies that his deeds proclaim it but that Alexander was the better chieftain until he drank with Lais.

George Meredith

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles.
