About this book

Vittoria by George Meredith is arranged in chapters from Chapter I to Chapter XLVI, with an Epilogue. The text says that from Monte Motterone you survey the Lombard plain, and that at dawn the summit of the mountain has an eagle eye for the far Venetian boundary and the barrier of the Apennines.

A woman replies It is, signore when asked whether her first night is the night of the fifteenth of next month, and is also asked whether the opera is Camilla. A man obtained the help of a French officer in as bad case as himself to write a short testamentary document with his blood, putting down among others the name of his friendly enemy's widow, and the Austrian survived to find the sad widow and espouse her. Merthyr is swept by thoughts of Carlo's voice and fine face, accusing him of stupid fatalism, though in his wise mind he knew Carlo to have surveyed things justly and that the Fates are within us.

George Meredith

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles.
