About this book

John Beaudry rides through the Big Creek country with his sleepy five-year-old son, watching every bend in the trail for danger. As sheriff, he has challenged the cattle thieves who hold influence over the district, and the Rutherford gang has threatened his life. His efforts to protect little Royal give William MacLeod Raine's Western novel a personal stake from its opening camp beside the creek.

Later, Roy Beaudry and Beulah clash over accusations against her family. When she hears that a captive has been denied food to force him to reveal the location of gold, she sets off through a dark ravine to investigate. Raine places family loyalty beside the demands of justice, with mountain paths, ranches and armed confrontations shaping the action. Readers interested in frontier fiction will find a story that gives room to fear, tenderness and divided loyalties as well as physical courage.
