A family feud casts its shadow over the opening of this Western novel. Young Jimmie Clanton grows up among armed quarrels, while his sister Lindy secretly meets Dave Roush, a member of the rival family. Her attraction to Dave clashes with her father's harsh treatment and the rules of the feud. The riverbank meeting and the boy carrying his rifle give the opening its mixture of affection and danger.
Later scenes move into cattle country, where Clanton and Billie Prince are fugitives facing armed pursuers. Bertie Lee Snaith tries to help them, sends for riders, and confronts her father when help arrives. A cattle drive and a delivery contract at a fort broaden the story beyond the family quarrel.
