About this book
The Sieges of Vienna by the Turks is by Karl August Schimmer, translated from the German with other sources by the Earl of Ellesmere. A verse on the title page tells how Sobieski turned to flight the Muslim from Vienna's walls. The text says the Sultan's letter was used by Zriny as wadding for his own musket, and for seventeen days the town held out against repeated assaults.
The text says the Sultan was found dead in his tent on the 6th of September, at the age of seventy-six, closing a reign of forty-five years by a tranquil and natural death. The text says that on the 8th September, when the Turks were pressing forward along a narrow bridge to the castle, the gate was suddenly flung open and a large mortar loaded with broken iron was discharged into their ranks. The text says orders were issued by Count Stahremberg to all the troops, regular and irregular, to hold themselves in readiness for a sally during the expected battle of the morrow.
