About this book

The History of the Thirty Years' War carries a preface saying the present is the only collected edition of the principal works of Schiller which is accessible to English readers. The preface also says that Schiller was not less efficiently qualified by nature for an historian than for a dramatist.

The text says that a religious treaty meant to extinguish for ever the flames of civil war was in fact but a temporary truce, extorted by force and necessity. The text adds that what each side saved or gained by the treaty of Augsburg it owed to the imposing attitude of strength which it maintained at the time of its negotiation. The text also says George, Landgrave of Hesse Darmstadt, was compelled to a timely submission, and that Gustavus used jestingly to call the Landgrave the peacemaker.

Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
