The preface says that the manual describes several new slide rules for special calculations and extends its contents with a section on screw-cutting gear calculations. The discussion of calculation methods advises the student to develop the habit of estimating the magnitude of a result, whichever method is chosen.
The treatment of rough approximation says that practice enables reliable results to be obtained rapidly and that the method applies to calculations generally. The worked applications include finding an engine slide valve’s angle of advance when its lap, lead and travel are given. The explanation of notation describes a way of representing an arithmetical quantity through factors and a moved decimal point.
