About this book
A message delivered in the early hours summons the narrator to Olaf Jansen, an elderly fisherman living near Los Angeles. Jansen has an account of northern exploration to share and maps and drawings to entrust to him. Willis George Emerson frames this imaginary voyage through the uncertainty of a listener trying to assess claims that challenge accepted geography. The opening sets personal testimony beside references to polar research and ancient mythology.
In the voyage itself, a small fishing craft enters a broad river called Hiddekel and passes forests of enormous trees. Fresh water replenishes supplies, while nuts gathered ashore vary the provisions. A much larger ship approaches with a chorus of singing voices. Six men of gigantic stature row over to the little vessel, where one notices the compass and takes an interest in it. These concrete details connect everyday needs at sea with the imagined scale of an inner world, giving readers an example of exploration shaped into speculative fiction.
