About this book

Plans for an ocean voyage take shape beside a swimming pool at Glen Ellen, where Jack London and his companions talk about the seaworthiness of small boats. A suggestion made in fun becomes a decision to build the Snark. London connects that decision to his pleasure in physical achievement, recalling the strain and satisfaction of steering a schooner through a typhoon off Japan. His opening makes the proposed voyage an expression of personal appetite for difficult tasks.

This travel memoir combines such reflections with accounts of sailing and encounters ashore. Its chapters cover finding a course, a Pacific crossing, stone-fishing at Bora Bora and cruising in the Solomons. London dedicates the book to Charmian, the mate who took the wheel during passages and emergencies. The middle excerpt describes a village feast and the ceremonial arrival of roasted pigs. Readers interested in ocean travel will find practical concerns alongside an outspoken account of what draws the author to sea.
