About this book
The Standard Oratorios: Their Stories, Their Music, and Their Composers is a handbook by George P. Upton. The preface calls it a companion to the Standard Operas and says it outlines the sacred stories the oratorios tell, sketches their principal numbers, and gives a short biography of each composer with related history.
The text traces oratorio through three stages: sacred drama in Italy, passion music in Germany and the oratorio in England, naming Bach and Handel along the way. One passage gives the life of a composer who took the post of conductor at the Court Theatre in Weimar. A list of works by composer, with dates, includes Handel's Messiah (1741) and Haydn's The Creation (1796-98).
