About this book
On Conducting (Üeber Das Dirigiren) is by Richard Wagner and is described as a treatise on style. The translator's note says the work was immediately issued in book form, Leipzig, 1869. A poem frontispiece dated 1869 carries a motto after Goethe whose lines read Flysnout and Midgenose, with all your kindred, too, Treefrog and Meadow-grig, true musicians, you.
The text says that celebrated German orchestras remained far behind those of France in the power and capacity of the violins, and particularly of the violoncellos. The text says that a number of Viennese amateurs who attended a performance of an overture described as poor and maltreated heard it rendered in a very different manner. The writer says he is told that Herr J. Brahms expects all possible good to result from a return to the melody of Schubert's songs.
