About this book

Writing to his friend Herbert Swanborough in Massachusetts, Stark Munro turns personal letters into an account of ambition, friendship and belief. Arthur Conan Doyle's 1895 novel presents correspondence dated from 1881 to 1884. The opening dwells on James Cullingworth, a former university acquaintance whose inventive confidence, athletic strength and quick temper make a strong impression on Munro. Recollections of medical student life mix admiration with unease about this forceful personality.

Munro's conversational voice allows professional concerns to sit alongside arguments about religion and independent judgment. A later letter describes a change in his working relationship with Cullingworth, then takes up differences of conviction between Munro and his correspondent. Elsewhere, a comic account of mistaken interpretations of London's everyday objects challenges confident claims about the past. Readers who enjoy fiction told through letters will find both character sketches and the restless reasoning of a young man trying to establish his direction.
