About this book
Arthur Christopher Benson is the author of Memoirs of Arthur Hamilton, B. A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, "Extracted from his letters and diaries, with reminiscences of his conversation by his friend CHRISTOPHER CARR of the same college". The dedication is addressed "To H. L. M. My dear Friend" and speaks of "the long list of delicate benefits for which a friend can not be directly repaid". The text recalls one speaker's early reading: a love for pastoral and descriptive poetry, Thomson and Cowper, and Tennyson, with the aim "I intended to be a poet".
A narrator recalls going "with him once, at his own request, to a seaman's hospital, where there was a poor fellow who had fallen from a mast and been terribly smashed". The account reports that "I have seen him several times go off into a dead faint at even the bare description of bodily suffering". A speaker says: "I could not have believed that a memory could hang so heavily round my neck."
