About this book
Dionysius Lardner's book, in its seventh edition, explains the steam engine and gives an account of its invention and progressive improvement and its application to navigation and railways. The title page, dated London, 1840, announces a memoir of Watt and engravings on wood.
Among the early episodes are Anthemius and his neighbour Zeno, with steam from closed boilers sent under Zeno's floors until they heaved like an earthquake, and the experiment of Blasco de Garay, a sea captain who proposed to Emperor Charles V in 1543 to move vessels without oars or sails, tried at Barcelona on the vessel Trinity. Other sections discuss the boiler's grate and furnace, noting that the proportions of the parts have not been fixed by exact experiments, and a paddle shaft that the engineer can throw into and out of gear.
