About this book
The Stock Exchange from Within is a book by William C. Van Antwerp. The preface calls the writer a busy stockbroker and points to many quotations from the world’s foremost economists, along with various legal and historical precedents. The text argues that the specialist speculates for the same reason that jobbers in the London market speculate, and dealers in wheat, cotton, and wool.
The text also describes the “two-dollar broker,” who executes orders for members in any part of the room at $2 per hundred shares, and tells of one such man who lost $10,000 on a 500-share order with a commission of $10. The text discusses the conclusions of a royal commission, which it calls of very great importance, and says the evils of that form of Stock Exchange speculation which closely approaches mere gambling were plainly stated.
